On the 70th Anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz, survivors and world leaders gathered to mark the milestone and reflected on the lessons to be learned by the generations that follow.
Roman Kent, Holocaust survivor and President of the International Auschwitz Committee declared an 11th Commandment in his moving speech before the survivors and dignitaries present declaring, “You should never be a bystander”. He continued, “Hate is never right and love is never wrong.”
From around the world, leaders commented on the relevance of this historic day. President Obama said, “Honoring the victims and survivors begins with our renewed recognition of the value and dignity of each person. It demands from us the courage to protect the persecuted and speak out against bigotry and hatred.”
Pope Francis remarked, “Auschwitz cries out with the pain of immense suffering and pleads for a future of respect, peace and encounter among peoples.”
