The release of five American prisoners held in Iran was the culmination of a sustained diplomacy between the US and Iran. By directly engaging with Iran, the US was able to secure a landmark nuclear deal, lift the economic sanctions in Iran and secure a prisoner exchange program.
There is hope that in this environment of creating new partnerships, further progress can be made on Syria peace talks, economic and social reforms. One can only hope that the government leadership will continue to build trust and create more stability and improvement of human rights.
The diplomatic success achieved in Iran and Cuba illustrate the possibilities of dialogue, incentives and perseverance. Where there was once isolation and a cycle of mistrust, there is cause for optimism for diplomacy within the global community.
